College strives to reduce maternity death

ADDIS ABABA – St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College announced that the college has been undertaking several measurements to provide maternal health care service. Hospital Deputy Provost Dr. Lidya Tefera said that on average the Hospital provides maternity service for 900 women and the number of women who get pre and post natal care and support in the College has reached to 30 thousand per year.

The college has been providing support for peer hospitals and health centers to reduce mother and child mortality rate by assigning experts, she noted. With the aim of enhancing maternal and child care, the College is constructing new, eight-floor building.

“The building will commence service within a month’s time.” By establishing a center in which infertility treatment is offered, the College has finalized preparation to launch the treatment from the beginning of February; and it is planned to treat 500 couples this year and 2,000 annually, Dr. Lidya stated.

Mentioning that the service is the first ever center of government health institution, she said that the treatment is assisted with state of the art medical equipments.

As to her, every year closely 1000 people travel abroad in searching of this treatment spending significant amount of hard currency. Hopefully, the launching of the service will benefit thousands of people and save the hard currency spend to medical treatment in overseas, she remarked.
