ADDIS ABABA – Journalists and media organizations have to work in line with professional and ethical standards in all their journalistic endeavors said the Ethiopian Media Council (EMC) expressing worries by the blurring lines between journalism and activism.
In an exclusive with The Ethiopian Herald, Chairperson of the Council Amare Aregawi said that some media had been spreading hate and fake news instead of creating unity among the community. This is a high time that the media can discharge its due roles in protecting Ethiopia and its peoples from a looming danger, he added.
Further, he said freedom of the press is crucial but its exercise should not be at the expense of peace, he said, adding that journalists should work professionally and ethically.
The Council was formed in January 2016, and received formal recognition in June 2019 as an independent Civil Society Organization (CSO) under the new proclamation that rules CSOs. The members of the Council reaches 52 which include public and private media outlets, it was learnt.
