The Under 20 athletics championship that took place in Assela came to an end on Sunday, the Ethiopian Athletics Federation announced. According to the federation the purpose of this race was to find out young talents in this age group.
But the problem the federation faced was that most regions brought above age contenders focussing on results. In the eyes of the federation’s Technical Director Dube Jilo the problem of age factor has now become almost out of control. “We missed the purpose of this national race. If we get young talents in their true age limit the national team will easily be strengthened.
If not the problem at the national level will remain unresolved. If things go this way, the federation will keep on depending on talents that come by sheer luck. That is not a good trend,” Dube said. He added that minor improvements have been seen this year than it was last year.
