AU—pay homage to black people’s heritage

Ethiopians had successfully resisted colonialism and colonialists’ project of partitioning Africa and put the example to all the oppressed people at the landslide victory of Adwa as the myth of European domination was able to be defeated.

The 124th Victory Day will be marked on a national level on Monday, March 2, 2020. Sadly; however, when the seat of the African Union (AU) Headquarters, Addis Ababa, marks the day, the continental union will not officially celebrate the victory Day, nor does other African countries—while, in fact, the victory made at Adwa ignited the engines of the struggle to freedom and independence throughout African and beyond.

The pan-African union, AU, as well as its precursor, Organization for African Unity (OAU), has become a reality as a result of the ever-glittering victory that the selfless, proud and brave Ethiopians had made. Those peasant soldiers who offered the spark of struggle-to-dignity deserve due respect from the brainchild of pan-Africanism, the African Union.

The respect is meant to inspire the youths of today and the forthcoming generation. We need more and more Adwas to liberate Africa and its billion peoples economically. We must play our due roles in the international fronts. And we must reassert our dignity. The youths can emulate various lessons out of the victory, and more victor entrepreneurs, politicians, and whatnot will come to the scene when we pay homage to the past.

Pan-African intellectuals who run the continental organization, pan-African scholars, thinkers and intellectuals and the like should rally behind this proposal and must award the youths of today and the posterity with enduring inspirations. The African Union should take one more critical step to observe the Victory of Adwa officially.
