Project to resolve water security issues

ADDIS ABABA – The five year water security and sustainable development project is said to be significant in resolving water security issues of Abay, Awash and Central Rift Valley basins in general.

This was stated at the 2nd Annual Assembly of water security and sustainable development hub.

The project focuses on resolving water security issues of Abay, Awash and Central Rift valley basins, said Gete Zeleke(PhD), Researcher in Water and Land Resource Center (WLRC) of AAU.

Making use of rain during the dryseason, identifying the source, the level and type of pollution in the Awash Basin, managing water use and surface groundwater interaction with water allocation and knowing the abstraction (efficiency of water) of the Central Rift Valley Basin are the priority area of the project, as to him.

He stressed that the outcomes of the researches are meant to be used as insights for devising policies and strategies.

Kaba Urgessa (PhD), State Minister of Natural Resource and Food Security at MOA, on his part stated that the project is significant as it helps the nation to recognize its water resources for irrigation, energy and other similar development purposes.

He noted that the major objective of the project is said to be unlocking systemic barriers to achieving water security in practice through developing and demonstrating a system and capacity building approach to better understand water systems, value all aspects of water and strengthen water governance.

Ethiopia, United Kingdom (UK), Colombia, India and Malaysia as the major member countries, are taking part in the discussion to construct new ideas and resolve water security issues.

The second annual assembly, coordinated by Newcastle University, is expected to be concluded on Friday.
