Adwa-beacon light to colored freedom fighters, women’s pride

Few days remain before the commemoration of the 124th Adwa victory. The showdown on the mountains of Adwa showcased the first victory of black and traditionally armed people against a white European fascist armed to the teeth. It as well signified hope to the subjugated or colored people who have to get up and stand up to fight for their rights.

When we mark this special day we equally remember heroin Empress Taitu the jewel on the crown of the success.

She heroically marched to the battlefront motivating the army to be martyrs for their sovereign country. She was giving strategic directions. She managed to mobilize 10 to 12 thousand women to see to logistics on top of nursing the wounded. Some fetched water to soldiers, while others stayed in camp to care for the wounded.

Taitu is considered as a brilliant military strategist because she advised Ras Mekonnen to cut off invaders from the water point to dislodge them from their heavily fortified position at Endeyesus Hill. Taitu was also the receiver and analyzer of intelligence information collected by spies.

As opposed to the normal trend, women’s role on the mountains of Adwa bubbles up to the foreground. The outstanding heroine Taitu was an architect of the battle with her sagacious, courageous and patriotic leadership. She confronted the bellicose fascist along with her husband Emperor Menelik.
