Ethiopia, India advancing friendship and multifaceted cooperation

ADDIS ABABA — India has placed the highest priority on advancing friendship and cooperation with Ethiopia in various social, economic and political aspects, Ambassador of India to Ethiopia said. In the presence of the diplomatic community and higher officials on Thursday, the Indian Embassy remarked here the celebration of the 70th year of the founding of the Indian republic, and the 70th year of the establishment of formal diplomatic ties between India and Ethiopia.

On his opening remark, the ambassador Anurag Srivastiva said that the economic and development cooperation between the two countries continued for 70 years as the major milestone that makes the year 2019 special. Although the two ancient civilizations India and Ethiopia were in partnership for 70 years, our economic partnership, the core of the relations, is still flourishing, the Ambassador noted. “Our cooperation in capacity building has been growing in newer areas. Our development partnership has also moved to a new height, and our cultural ties have grown stronger.”

Ambassador also said the bilateral relation between Ethiopia and India goes branded as multifaceted, vibrant and strong. Conveying messages on behalf of the people and government of Ethiopia, Dr, Ergoge Tesfaye, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, recalled that Ethiopia was one of the first African countries to open its Embassy in India in 1948 that was immediately after India’s independence in 1947. Since then, the two countries have exerted efforts to strengthen their long standing bilateral ties, he added. Dr. Ergoge said Ethiopia sees India as a very important and strategic partner that covers trade, investment, development and technical assistance.

“The cooperation between the two countries is not limited to bilateral issues alone; we also cooperate closely on regional matters to jointly contribute to the global peace and stability.” According to Dr. Ergoge, Ethiopia and many countries in Africa have an excellent opportunity to learn from India’s significant experience in managing diversity built in strong multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-religious and secular nation state.

India has registered remarkable development in the field of science, technology, education, agriculture, and infrastructure, which point toward exemplary growth trajectory for the rest of the world, Minister Dr. Ergoge highlighted.
