Center applying e-learning, telemedicine to treat critical illnesses

ADDIS ABABA – All Africa Leprosy Education, Rehabilitation and Treatment Center (ALERT) training center announced that it is applying E-service in the treatment of critical diseases as well as training of physicians.

In an interview with The Ethiopian Herald Martha Fekadu, Director at ALERT Training Division said that it was able to conduct 38 dermatology cases through Tele-medicine by the year 2018/19. Additionally, there are 24 medical cases across the country. The medicine includes pre and post treatment besides medical checkups, she noted.

Martha further stated that E-service is not significant only for Tele-medicine, but also it is vital for conducting serious medical trainings and consultations for health communities. Subsequently, a total of 315 trainees have participated in different medical training issues during the past two years of which seven were on Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB).

Due to its advantage in reaching a large sum of audience at a time, E-learning is preferable as it can cut expenses for manual training by 42 percent.

Unlike its’ significance, she commented that lack of medical equipment and drugs among many clinics and health offices is the major challenge besides lack of government’s support and follow up. Therefore, the government in general particularly Ministry of Health (MoH), NGOs, Medias and other stakeholders should engage in creating awareness among the citizens, she suggested.

She also added that MoH should work on scaling up the system and share the experience among each health sectors actors apart from making supervision.

As to her, ALERT training center has established e-learning training and Tele-Medicine with the support of Help Ethiopia Address the Low TB performance (HEAL TB) and Management Sciences for Health (MSH) in year 2014/15
