Accidental Hero

He goes by Tamerat Goshu. One day, the young man went to the market to buy something for his dwells. When he returned, the scenery of the environment was changed due to the explosion of a cylinder. The sudden ignited fire burned everything that found in the nearby.

At the time when the fire was expanding its spot, many people found around the fire were leaving the place fearing the unpredictable fire. Surprisingly, Tamerat was the only person who stood in front of the fire. He was listening to terrible sound coming out of the fire “help me” and the noise tie his foot with the ground.

Within the fire, about 12 kitchen men had been started to burn and outcry again and again to gain the help of others. Even though there were some people who heard their sound, no one had a moral to approach them for providing the required assistance except Tamerat.

He decided to enter the fire and run to the ignited fire accumulating all the capacity he had. Within the difficult circumstances, he went to the fire again and again and pulled the victims until he reaches to a safe place. Eventually, he could save the lives of 12 people, which was difficult to imagine.

This was happened on January 2, 2015/16 at 3:30 pm in Mexico area hinder-most of Genet Hotel. The tragedy was ended claiming the life of a woman and physical injury of Tamerat and eleven others. Now, Tamerat and the survivors are at good health condition.

The 12 people, he saved according to him were not able to come out from the fire as the cylinder gas pulled them in to it. That is why they need the help of others to come out of the fire. Unfortunately, one woman was dead after five days of the trauma. Compared to the saved people, Tamerat was injured severely. All of them are treated well and return to their jobs after taking some medical treatments for some weeks.

“People live for their own without remembering the forgotten ones. With this they have not been getting satisfaction. Living for others is a blessing. When you live for yourself, you will live in vain. But if you live for others, you will live again.” He recoiled the quotation it says, “Forget yourself and live for others, for it is more blessed to give than revive.” here Tamerat says; “I am not advising you to enter the burning fire for the sake of saving the life of others, you can help others with the capacity you have.”

The scar at his face, hands witnessed how he loves human beings than his own body. Though it takes longer period of time, Tamerat’s body was treated medically. But still, as his hands are not moving, he requires the assistance of others to eat and perform other daily activities.

Indicating that he has been assisting 25 destitute mothers, Tamerat said “I think their blessing and prayer saved me from that fire. When mothers come to me, they come with melancholic gesture, but while they returned home with full of happiness.” If every youth do the same thing for impoverished mothers, Ethiopia would not see destitute mothers residing in shabby houses with full of troubles. According to him, though it is not enough for them, when they come to a small restaurant, “I share what I have with the needy mothers.”

Thanks to my family and friends, they paid rental fee of the restaurant for three consecutive years until I fully rehabilitated from physical injury. Tamerat has no residence and he resides in the restaurant where he works on. Instead of renting a house for shelter, he prefers to increase the mothers who seeks assistance from him.

He wants to thank his wife Seble Jifar for her relentless effort to treat him without leaving him at times of difficulties.

Considering the humanitarian duty he did and is doing, the Addis Ababa City Mayor Engineer Takele Umma visited his working place and thanking him for his exemplary deed. At times of the visit, he told to the mayor that he lived together with his wife at the small restaurant and the mayor pledged to provide a house for him.
