ADDIS ABABA – Politicians commended Prime Minster Abiy Ahmed’s success in striking a deal with South Africa government to let Ethiopians get legal permission to run business and reside in the country.
Dr. Fasil Nahom, adviser to former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, noted that the move is commendable, and in a way, South Africa returned the favor for Ethiopia’s past stand and support for Africans freedom.
During the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie, he continued, Mandela was invited to Ethiopia to get military training, because the country had been champion of African freedom against colonial intervention.
According to him, Mandela was given Ethiopian Passport as well, and was protected by loyal military personnel from planned assassination, and had it not been for the heroic deeds the long way for freedom would not have culminated in its current victorious outcome.
Also, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Cyril Ramaphosa agreement proves that the two countries’ relation is historical and should be maintained.
In my view, the task of any government is to make sure each fellow protected and the efforts of the Primer in this regard have been commendable because he tries to translate it to the ground.
Former member of House Peoples’ Representatives, Girma Seifu for his part
noted that the prime task of a responsible government is to create a better opportunity for its citizens, and this agreement is a manifestation of that principle.
