Indian universities luring Ethiopian students

ADDIS ABABA – Under the initiative of Government of India, over 100 premier Indian Institutes organized ‘Study in India Education Fair for 2020’ from 10th and 11th January 2020 at Capital Hotel, with an aim to apprise the facilities available for the students of Ethiopia.

Second Secretary at the Embassy of India I.M. Husain told The Ethiopian Herald that under the scheme, about 35,000 seats are available for over 2,600 courses for Under Graduate, Post Graduate, PHD in about 100 premier Indian Institutes with around 21,000 fee waivers and 2,000 scholarships.

As to him, the event would provide an opportunity to the students of Ethiopia to meet representatives of the institutes and get guidance on the registration, counseling and admission process and avail scholarships and fee waivers.

Azad Ashutosh, the Scheme Coordinator, also said ‘Study in India’ is a mega project by the Government of India under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resources (MHRD) in collaboration with Ministry of External Affairs of India.

 Ashutosh said the programme has partnered with over 100 premier Indian institutes like IIMs, IITs, NITs, private and government institutes shortlisted on basis of NIRF top 100 rankings and NAAC accreditation score (3.26 out of 4).

As to him, these Institutes are offering attractive tuition fee waiver of up to 100 percent to bright international students with courses ranging across UG, PG, PhD & niche segments. Meritorious students can avail “Study in India scholarship” of up to USD 12,000 additionally along with the fee waiver, he added.

Approached by The Ethiopian Herald, four Ethiopian students Chernet Abayneh, Chernet Eyasu, and Asmamaw Tamiru from Addis Ababa Science and Technology University as well as Temesgen Mengistu from Engineering College of Addis Ababa University said that they are inspired by the initiative which brings them multiple opportunity in the education sector.

The students also lauded that the process of admission at “Study in India” is completely online where a student has to go on the website to register, login, fill the student information, choose courses with fee waivers in top institute of their choice and submit the application.
