Lawmakers pass gun control bill

ADDIS ABABA – The House of People’s Representatives passed yesterday firearms control and administration law that would help the country enforce international agreements it entered concerning illicit firearm control while fostering international cooperation.

The proclamation will help to control illegal weapons trafficking and control them only through the concerned administrations, he added.

“Presenting the draft proclamation, Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs Standing Committee Chairperson Tesfaye Daba said the law will fulfill the lack of uniformity with regard to regulating and controlling weapons and their usage in the country,” the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported.

“The proclamation will help to control illegal weapons trafficking and control them only through the concerned administrations,” according to ENA.

The law would also safeguard public and national safety and security as well as ensure the rights of citizens and peoples of the country, it was learnt.

Further, the bill could facilitate the utilization of firearms in the hands of individuals to maintain the peace and security of the community.

The ratification was preceded by the deliberation of the House on reports on the draft bill compiled by Foreign Relations and Peace Standing Committee in coordination with Legal, Justice and Administration Affairs Standing Committee.

According to the report of Fana Broadcasting Corporate, the bill was ratified by a sweeping majority with two voting against and four abstentions.
