Hosanna – Wachemo University said it is implementing new project named ‘Zero Plans with Zero Drugs’ to provide students an alternative approach to curtail their socio-economic problems through dialogue and discussion.
President at Wachamo University Habtamu Abebe (Ph.D) said that the project eyes on improving the country’s social capital asset such as building durable linkage between and among students, respecting one the other, and rebuilding self-help mechanisms among others.
It also focused on enabling female students discuss on various issues without any interference, particularly on ways how to resist peer pressure, HIV prevention, economic supporting methods, he added.
Previously, female students were missing classes for more than a week during menstruation period due to afraid of speaking their problems. Now, with this project, they could able to discuss and help each other, the President stated.
Likewise, the University also launches ‘Zero drug system’ that aims at supporting male students to be free from drug, reduce alcohol, and denounce harassment activities on female through various entertaining approaches.
As to the President, the university is working on research based community-centered activities such as providing farmers with improved seeds and chemicals for harmful insects as well as shaping attitude towards peace building and so on. As part of this, the university has planned to establish Gender Research Institution in the near future so as to create a sustainable and conducive learning environment, particularly for disable students, he noted.
