Ethio telecom plans to finance public universities, researchers

ADDIS ABABA – Ethio telecom has announced its plan to finance problem-solving researches and students in need at public universities.

CEO of Ethio telecom, Frehiwot Tamru told journalists that her company plans to support problem solving researches. The company invited universities and research centers to explore and come up with statement of problems together with possible solutions which will have greater impact to pull out the community from the vicious cycle of poverty.

“In this regard, our company has planned to discharge its social responsibility by working closely with its stakeholders.” On the launch of 16 million Birr project on Tuesday, Frehiwot said the project is aiming at supporting economically disadvantageous students in 45 public universities across the country. Investing in students is equipping tomorrow’s leaders and laying foundation to build a mighty nation.

The project planned to benefit 4,000 students who face some sort of challenges due to lack of pocket money, noting that her company has already prepared procedures of how the money will be dispersed among students in need. Besides, the company has been providing food and stationary for over 14 thousand students. It has also facilitated condition for 100 college girls to have training in fashion designing.

Acknowledging the initiation of the company, university presidents participated on the event applauded Ethio Telecom’s effort. “We need to work aggressively with the company to change this reality. Ethio-telecom should be taken as exemplary for other institutes. “We shared this vision to change the lifestyle of students and communities in general.”

Starting assistances for few students since 2014/15, the company is now providing assistance for 840 students in 13 public universities.
