ADDIS ABABA – The first phase construction of a national stadium named Adey Abeba Stadium has been completed, according to FDRE Sport Commission.
Facility Director at Sport Commission, Asmera Gizaw said that some 98.5 percent of the first phase construction of the stadium has been completed. While the remaining 1.5 percent of field play’s grass planting and track construction activities are deliberately made to stay as expense of commission’s interest. This enables for the construction of second phase for the next three years.
According to him, the project delayed due to inhabitant relocation and shortage of hard currency to import materials and pay contractors in the last three years.
Indicating previous report differences, Melese Lemma, MH Engineering Project Control Engineer said that currently first phase construction of the whole project has been completed. The remaining 1.5 percent is deliberately made to stay.
According to Asmera, as the construction is ongoing by two phases, now the project is transformed into the second phase. “To start the second phase of its construction, tender or bidding competition winner is identified.”
The construction of spectators seating, display screens, roofing, parking dot, control and sound system, outdoor pitch, security cameras, theatres and other finishing works are the main activities in second phase, he added.
The stadium meets the standards of FIFA and IAAF which helps Ethiopia to host both world cup final and Olympic Games.
According to the Commission, Adey Abeba, the world-class stadium will have the capacity of over 60,000 spectator’s seats and adjacent Sports Village will provide a new home for all Ethiopian’s sporting enthusiasm.
After completion, it will serve to host a swimming pool, volleyball, basketball, football field and other sporting facilities. The stadium will be covered by a distinctive dome. With a dynamic steel structure, the roof will be also covered in decorated tensile membrane panels. All facilities are to meet FIFA and IAAF requirements.
The government allotted a 2.4 bln Birr construction budget to finalize the stadium. The construction has created jobs for youths, who would be also benefited from technology transfer in due course.
