Ethiopia, Eritrea set to conduct friendly football match in Asmara

ADDIS ABABA – After two decades, Ethiopia and Eritrea are set to play a friendly football match soon in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, according to the Eritrean National Football Federation.

To foster people to people relationship, Ethiopia and Eritrea National Football Team have set to play a friendly football match in Asmara soon, Isaias Abraham, Eritrean National Football Federation President told local media in Addis Ababa on Dec 17, 2019.

“The Eritrean national team currently participating in the East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has reached for the final of the competition. After the CECAFA tournament, we have reached an agreement to hold the game in Asmara soon by facilitating the situations,” Isaias said.

In August, an agreement was reached between the two countries for a friendly game in Asmara city in an attempt to strengthen the brotherhood of the two people, but the game didn’t host due to various reasons.

Recently, the Ethiopian Cultural Group led by Bezunesh Meseret, State Minister of Culture and Tourism was headed to Asmara to strengthen people to people relation. As part of this, the two countries have set to conduct a friendly football match soon, Eritrean Football Federation President Isaiah Abraham told the local media on Dec 17, 2019.

After the Ethio-Eritrean war, the Ethiopian clubs and national team had never played a game with the Eritrean clubs and national teams since the two nations involved in a border war that began in 1998.
