No longer onlookers

We have a unique opportunity now to work diligently and transform our country’s socio-economic and political conditions.

Without committed leadership which also based itself on the principle of inclusivity and sense of belongingness, the opportunity that comes once in a blue moon may end up being just a futile.

The recent decision of the unification of the parties that constituted the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) which in turn championed in embracing the previous bystanders into a new party has been long overdue.

The measure could be described with the phrase ‘a showcase of genuine equality’. Particularly, the previous parties that had claimed to represent tens of millions of the entire population in Afar, Somali, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambela, and Hareri states were unjustifiably sidelined from making a decision that affects the lives of their people.

On its 11th Congress, the precursor of Prosperity Party (PP), set a direction to further enhance strategic partnership with the affiliated parties while the parties urged EPRDF to consider their integration into  the Front sooner than later in their opening remarks.

The affiliate parties also urged the ruling to walk the talks. Of course, the time has come for the Front to fulfill its promises and give birth to PP.

It is worthy to note that our country is taking major political, economic and social decisions. And the decisions might involve diverse interests. It may please some groups while creating a little bit of discomfort to others. This is natural. One of the critical questions that should be raised is: Do the measures positively impact on the lives of the masses and are adequate studies preceded the decisions?

Various government bodies including the former EPRDF top brasses frequently announced as the Front had carried out studies to give the issue a final blow.

Whatever the case is, our country cannot afford any longer making some people get comfy seats around a decision-making table while the rest remain onlookers. Hence, the unification is a right step to the party and also to the exercise of democracy.
