Celebration of Nations, Nationalities and People’s Day abroad

Ethiopia has 46 Embassies and 14 Consulate Generals across the world. Citizen based diplomacy and promoting of Ethiopia as Trade, Investment and Tourism destination for foreign communities are the major aspects of the embassies missions.

One of Ethiopia’s unique features that serve as tourist attraction is the cultural diversity. Ethiopia is home to more than 80 nations, nationalities and peoples with rich cultural, linguistic features.

The ages old culture of the peoples living in tolerance is one of the factors that sets a good example in the world. Anniversary of nations, nationalities and peoples here at home gives a good opportunity for both the local people as well as foreigners to obtain deeper understanding of the people’s culture of tolerance and interaction.

To further extend the significance of the anniversary overseas, Ethiopia’s diplomatic missions in various countries celebrate the day with their staffs, and Ethiopian communities.

According to the document gathered from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Participants emphasized the importance of the day for promoting cultures, lifestyles and other values to strengthen ties among people in Ethiopia.

As an example, Ethiopian embassy in Cuba has made a panel discussion with Ethiopian communities living in Havana. H.E. Asfaw Dingamo, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Cuba stated that the government and its entire citizens should work for strengthening unity as the day remarks the equality of each nation, nationalities and people of Ethiopia.

Apart from this, the ambassador emphasized that people of Ethiopia need to get awareness creating trainings among the essence of federal system. “We should learn from our history and strive to build better Ethiopia to the future, he added.

On the other hand, Ethiopian’s communities in South Sudan have celebrated the day inside Ethiopian Embassy in Juba. They also celebrated the day with a panel discussion under the title “the motives, challenges and results of the federal system”. Participants also agreed on solving the challenges through understanding its advantages.

Coupled with the federal system, they also discussed on the current status of Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). H.E. Teferi Tadesse Ambassador of Ethiopia to South Sudan stated that the dam will help for creating energy chain among East African countries apart from fulfilling Ethiopia’s demand for electricity.

Likewise, one of the participants promised to buy a 10 thousand USD bond which will be paid in two terms. Following this, the ambassador gave a bond certificate for GS Construction Co. Ltd that bought 5,000 USD bond. Additionally, he appreciated the company’s staff for their contribution in buying a 2,700 USD bond payment.

While celebrating the day with Ethiopian communities, H.E. Abdulaziz Mohammod, Ambassador of Ethiopian to Djibouti said that the day remarked the equality of nations, nationalities and peoples of Ethiopia. On the occasion, religious leaders and government officials were attended coupled with the communities.

The MoFA’s document further indicates that Ethiopian embassies in various countries like Kenya, Sudan and Egypt have also celebrated the 14th Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day. And participants have called up on Ethiopians to stand with the government to solve problems faced on Ethiopian federal system. Other diplomatic missions are also getting ready to celebrate the day.
