IGAD concludes summit, elects new head

● Abiy appreciates member states’ combined efforts in settling shared problems

ADDIS ABABA – The 13th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) concluded yesterday with the adoption of a new organizational structure and election of Sudanese Prime Minister Abdela Humdock as the chairperson of the sub-regional organization.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has replaced Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in the position that was long held by Ethiopia. Former chairperson, Prime Minister Abiy in his opening remarks thanked the regional leaders for putting trust on Ethiopia’s leadership for many years.

Abiy also emphasized on the role played by member states in restoring peace in the sub-region, their effectiveness in handling crises and avoiding conflicts in more recent times. Abiy appreciated AMISOM’s role in changing the difficult situations in Somalia; IGAD’s role in resolving conflicts in South Sudan and Sudan; and member states’ support for Ethiopia-Eritrea rapprochement.

These are just samples of the joint efforts exerted to settle joint problems, worth appreciating, he said.
