ADDIS ABABA – Saint George won the 14th edition of 2019 Addis Ababa City Cup beating Ethiopian Premier League new comers, Sebeta City 2-1 at capital’s stadium on Sunday.
The St. George became the winner of 2019 Addis Ababa City Cup for the six times following a 2-1victory over Sebeta City. St. George scored the first goal after 16 minutes by ZaboTeguy while Salhadin Seid sealed the winning goal on the 39th minute.
In the 14th capital’s cup organized by Addis Ababa Football Federation involving eight clubs in two groups, St. George reached final after winning Ethiopia Coffee 2-0 in the city’s Sheger derby on Thursday. Abel Yalew and Yabsera Tesfaye scored goals to qualify for the cup.
The runner, the new comer Sebeta City reached for cup competition after a 3-1 victory over Defense with scores by Tadele Mnegesha, Bonu Deyawara and Dawit Estifanos.
Defense took third place beating Ethiopia Coffee by penalty kicks, 4-2.
Defense were
grouped in Group B alongside Ethiopian Coffee, Walwalo Adigrat University and
Electric. St. George were grouped in Group A
alongside Bahir Dar City, Defense
and Wolkite City.
Ethiopian Coffee, Saint George, Defense and Electric are Addis Ababa City based clubs while the newly promoted to Ethiopia Premier League Wolkite and Sebeta City as well as Bahir Dar City and Welwalo Adigrat University were invited regional clubs.
St. George managed to win the tournament six times including this year, while the Ethiopia Coffee and Electric have won it three times each. Commercial Bank of Ethiopia and Dashen Beer have also won the title once.
Over the two-week event, Addis Ababa Football Federation brought about huge surprises for annual tournament uniquely featuring a trophy and significant amount of prize money for players. It is a good opportunity for the participating teams that are currently in the final phase of pre-season preparation for the coming new season.
The pre-season preparation matches like Addis Ababa City Cup are expected to help to the coming Ethiopian premier leagues tournaments.
The 2011/12 Ethiopia Super Cup featuring Premier League Champions of Mekelle Saba Enderta and Ethiopia Cup winner Fasil City FC will take place today at Addis Ababa Stadium. The Ethiopia Super Cup is an annual soccer match between the reigning Ethiopia Premier League and the winner of the Ethiopia Cup (FA Cup).
Elsewhere, the 2019/2020 Ethiopian Premier League is scheduled to commence on December 1, 2019, according to the Ethiopian Football Federation.
