Addis Ababa creates over 34,000 jobs in three months

ADDIS ABABA – Addis Ababa City has created over 34,000 job opportunities during the first quarter of the fiscal year, according to City’s Job Creation and Enterprise Development Bureau.

The Bureau further indicated that it hopes to attain its annual plan of creating 262,000 jobs by working with various institutions mainly through the newly starting mega projects of the city.

Out of its total plan the bureau aims to create about 200,000 of the jobs by organizing youths permanently and temporarily under associations while the remaining jobs would be created by employer institutions.

Bureau Public Relation Team Leader, Meron Adissie told The Ethiopian Herald that during the first quarter of the fiscal year the city was able to create only 34,503 jobs. Meron stated that 25,935 are permanent and 8,568 job opportunities are temporary job opportunities. Manufacturing, construction and urban agriculture account for majority of the jobs created during the first quarter.

Since the first quarter was preparation period, the created jobs were not satisfactory, she added.

Meron said to attain the target plan of creating 262 thousand jobs, the bureau is working with 20 government institutions of the city. She added that the various mega projects of the city are planned among the major contributors for job creation.

Meron stated that during the first quarter of the year mega projects created only 840 job opportunities.

In this case, Addis Ababa Housing Development and Administration Bureau’s Housing Development Corporation has planned to create for over 90,000 job opportunities, but the commencement of the housing projects was launched soon. And other mega projects of the city which play significant role in job creation are on process and on their initial phase of commencement, she added.

According to her the projects would play significant role in creating job opportunities and the bureau gives due attention to this case.

Meron stated that since institutions give priority to experienced enterprises due to their experience and capacity, we are working to make agreement with the institutions to give priority for newly established enterprises.
