EPRDF Council approves merger

ADDIS ABABA – The Council of the ruling coalition of four parties, Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) yesterday approved the party merger proposal unanimously while Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) boycotted its members not to take part in the meeting.

The merger is set to sustain and expand gained fruits in the economic, political, social and foreign policy affairs, EPRDF Executive Committee (EC) Member Fikadu Tesema told the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, adding that subjects such as constitution, ethnic federalism and building democratic constitutionalism will be further sustained after the merger.

He further stated that the merger will also correct wrong deeds that the Front has identified in its last meetings. Creating all inclusive developments and closing the gap between the two polarized views of ethnic diversity and national unity is the solution for the country, he added.

The constitutions enshrined equal guarantee to collective and individual rights. Thus, Fikadu said that these rights should be implemented according to the constitution. Neither to the right nor to the left wings, the merger is set to promote middle ground political thoughts in dealing with the political contexts in Ethiopia.”

Today, the Council is expected to discuss three issues; party program (political manifesto), the draft rules and principles and will included gained inputs, according to Fikadu.

It is recalled that the three-day meeting of the Executive Committee of EPRDF which was held last week to discuss the proposal for merging the Front ‘voted for’ with a majority votes and forwarded it to the EPRDF Council for further discussions.
