State tourism reviving and back to normal: Authority

World Tourism Organization report indicated that despite the fact that the world we are living had been through several political, economic, natural and health related challenges, world tourist destinations were busy of hosting their guests. According to the report irrespective of all the challenges the tourist flow was high within the last ten years. This is a good indication for the tourism industry.

Ethiopia’s tourist destination are not different form other tourist sites. The recent political unrest in some parts of the country did not deter tourists from visiting the country. Due to government’s special attention towards securing the safety of tourists both foreign and local visitors did not face challenges.

Bahir Dar city is one of the leading tourist destinations in Ethiopia. Lake Tana, Blue Nile River and Zeghe are some of its tourist attractions. In addition, the outskirt of the city is the home of several ancient historical monasteries. Bahir Dar is also known for its wide avenues lined with palm trees and a variety of colorful flowers.

In an exclusive interview with The Ethiopian Herald, Amhara State Tourism Development Directorate Director, Melkamu Adame, said that tourism is reviving in the city. According to him, despite the political situation it had faced some three months ago, tourism sector is now found in a good condition in the city now.

“After the killings of some senior government officials, tourist inflow had been declining. Fortunately now, the existing stable political situation in the city has created a favorable condition for tourism. Local and foreign tourists are now flocking to visit historical and cultural sites. Fasiledes Castle, Tis Abay waterfall, Ankober Palace and Lalibela church and others had been visited for the last three months under normal circumstances and peace is affirmed in general.

Tourism industry is now found in a good condition. The peace and stable situation of the regional state has created a favorable condition for tourists and no one should be afraid to come to either Bahir Dar or Lalibela and other tourist destinations in the state.

Melkamu said that to further ensure tourist security and protect their interest, the Directorate is working aggressively with State Justice Bureau and hotel owners.

According to him, as a means to further tap State tourist potential much promotion is needed and there should be support from the Federal government. “Ministry of Culture and Tourism is not providing the necessary support to tap the State tourist potential.”

Bekalu Misikir, is a manager at Lina Hotel in Bahir Dar. He said, following the June 2019 incident the hotel industry was slowing down and tourist flow had declined. However now, the stable situation in the region has enabled the tourism sector to revive. Bekalu said, tourism needs coordinated effort of every stakeholder.

“Sustainable peace should be verified to develop the tourism sector in the city. In this respect, we should work together to meet the interest of tourists.”

Amtom Thegrom is Belgian whom The Ethiopian Herald interviewed. He had spent twenty three days in Ethiopia by visiting several historical places. Thegrom said that his experience in Ethiopia was something he would not forget for the rest of his life time. All the historical and cultural tourist sites are unforgettable.

Concerning regional peace and hotel service Thegrom said, “I have got quality services in Bahir Dar City and the hotels are trying to give good services to their customers. Ethiopia is safe country for tourists; people are very warm welcoming.

He has visited various tribes and monasteries in Ethiopia.

Professor Jaules Brandio, is from America. Brandio had visited Ethiopia in 1972 when she was young. Her good memories about Ethiopia have brought her back again. For Brandio, spending time at Lake Tana, listing the sweet melodies of birds and walking around Bahir Dar City have a lasting impression.

Sicily Yet, is the another tourist. She is from Australia and spend fifteen days in Ethiopia visiting historical site. For her, Ethiopia is a wonderful country with beautiful tourist attractions. She said, during her visit she has met several hospitable people who are willing to share what they have. “Ethiopia is safe country for tourists and people are very welcoming and friendly.”
