Ethiopia, Eritrea open door to mutual growth in the Horn: Prof. Asmerom Legesse

ADDIS ABABA— Ethiopia’s unconditional acceptance of EthioEritrea Border Commission (EEBC) rulings has opened the door to mutual growth and cooperation between the two sisterly countries neutralizing the pre-existing tension, said an Eritrean Scholar Prof. Asmarom Legesse.

He further said that the Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy’s approach to the peace deal remains to be historic and exemplary decision to remove the prevailing hostile relationship between the two nations.

“As soon as he came to power, Dr. Abiy expressed his government unwavering commitment to implement the EEBC’s decisions .” According to him, the decision of the Prime Minister was made because of his authentic, determined and courageous leadership.

“He has corrected the past mistakes ; his ethical and trustworthy leadership has resulted in tremendous positive consequences for both nations and the Horn. Besides removing an embargo which was an ugly burden to Eritrea, the peace deal has created new economic opportunities for people in both countries as well as in the Horn,” stated adding, “in order to benefit from the peace deal in a sustainable manner, both countries should make well detailed cooperation of agreements.”

Prof. Asmerom also appreciated the ongoing reform the Ethiopian government is pursuing, “The reform is unquestionably benefiting all Ethiopians and the neighboring countries. In my view, it is the new day for Ethiopia.” The EEBC clearly defines the border between the two nations; rejecting its final and binding decisions is equivalent to violating the international law and it had also prolonged the conflict, according to him.
