Efficiency in production, value chain, and work habit helps improve textile sector in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA— The Ministry of Trade and Industry stated that improving the efficiency in the production process, value chains and employees’ discipline at work through excellence helps to change the textile and garment sector in the country.

The government of Ethiopia is set to improve the textile and garment sectors. The sectors are among the priorities of the incumbent. There is a belief that they have great share to the development of the nation, Minister of Trade and Industry Fetlework Gebre’egzabiher sated during the inauguration of Garment Excellence Center in Mekelle late last week.

To develop the sectors, the government of Ethiopia is working to solve the problems of along the value chain in the sector so as to maximize productivity and standardization process, the Minister added.

Using the inputs that the country is endowed with, such as cotton and easily trainable labor force, Ethiopia has a vision of maximizing up to the standard products, export to the global market and benefit from its high potential in the sector, the Minister stated.

“The main problem in the sector is lack of capacity. If our products are devoid of quality and do not meet the international market’s standard, we fail to win, to sustain in the business and to create more jobs for our fellows especially to the youth and women.”

Due focus will be given to improving the efficiency of production process, the work place discipline in order to change the textile and garment sector, she underscored before she went on to say that the Center of Excellence will play an important role in this regard.

The sector ,by its nature, is desirable as it demands huge number of young people. Thus, through improving the sector in countries such as Ethiopia with high and growing number of unemployed people, it is compulsory to expand investments in the sector in order for the unemployed youth and women to get employed, according to the Minister.
