Authority to commence bus rapid transit

ADDIS ABABA – Addis Ababa City Roads Authority disclosed it is on the way to commence the construction of modern bus rapid transit to curb the transportation problem in the city, which would also help people save their time and money spent during transportation.

Authority’s Communication Director Teumay Gebrekidan told The Ethiopian Herald that the Authority is ready to commence the construction of high quality roads for buss and pedestrians which has 14.7 KM length and 25 to 40 meters width.

According to Teum, the road starts from the North and extends to South of Addis Ababa. Since the transit covers most of the sub-cities in Addis, it passes through Gullele, Lideta, Addis-Ketema, Kolfe- Keranio, and Nefas- Silk-Lafto sub-cities.

Apart from reducing the traffic jam in the city, the transit would able to enhance modern mass transportation system in the city, Teumay noted. In this bus rapid transit system, about 160 buses, which have the capacity to transport 6,500 passengers in an hour, would provide services from 6 A.M to 10 P.M, he said.

The Authority intended to construct another bus rapid transit which passes through Ayer-Tena, Tor-Hailoch, Legehar, Shero-Meda, Bole, Megenagna, and Winget, the Director pointed out.

As to him, the Authority is now working on the demarcation across the construction sites. The project is financed by a loan worth of 85 Million euro from France. Moreover, a huge bus destination center will be built in Mekanessa, which can serve for parking, washing, and filling up fuel, Teumay explained.
