ADDIS ABABA– Foreign Minister Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD) delivered a message from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) to the President of the Republic of the Sudan, Omar al-Bashir, and held discussions on bilateral and regional issues.
Recalling the common interests of the two sisterly countries, Workneh reaffirmed readiness to ensure mutual benefits of the two peoples and secure lasting peace and stability in the sub-region. President Omar al-Bashir likewise emphasized his nation’s commitment to safeguard Ethiopian nationals living in the Sudan.
“We will work to make sure that Ethiopians living in Sudan feel at home. Ethiopia’s peace and stability is a matter of our national security concern.” Workneh on his part said, “We highly value the significance of our relations with the Republic of the Sudan.” According to Workneh, the bilateral ties between Sudan and Ethiopia are strong and based on mutual understanding and mutual benefits, and Ethiopia is ready to keep that with momentum.
Noting on the recent releases of over 1,000 Ethiopian nationals from Sudanese prisons on clemency, Dr. Workneh referred the Sudan’s move as a showcase of the ever-strengthening peopleto-people ties between the two sisterly countries.
Both underlined that the peoples of Ethiopia and Sudan, whom they described as the offspring of River Nile, have lived side by side for ages both in times of prosperity and challenges. The two sides have also agreed to work together in moving forward efforts aimed at economic integration and promotion of peace and stability in the Horn.
