ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian government is stepping up efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and ensure national food security through targeted and sustainable initiatives.
Speaking at a recent conference held in connection with World Bee Day, Adem Farah, with the rank of Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Coordination Center for Democracy Building, emphasized the urgent need for focused interventions to strengthen the sector. This year’s World Bee Day theme: “Protecting Bees,” highlights the critical role of pollinators in global food production and ecological health.
Adem reiterated the government’s commitment to increasing agricultural output, improving food supply chains, and advancing the quality of agricultural products through sustainable practices.
Agriculture Minister Girma Amante (PhD) also addressed the forum, stressing the importance of safeguarding bee populations to support honey production and broader agricultural success. He noted that Ethiopia remains one of Africa’s top honey producers and is making significant strides in modernizing honey production techniques.
According to the Ministry, over the past nine months, the government has established two million modern beehives and produced 250,000 tons of honey. These achievements underscore Ethiopia’s strategic focus on apiculture as a key component of its agricultural development agenda.
With its rich biodiversity and favorable climate, Ethiopia holds immense potential for agricultural growth. However, sustained efforts and innovation are essential to fully harness the sector’s capabilities and secure long-term food self-sufficiency.
