Lemi cement factory boosts Ethiopia’s supply by over 50%

  • Produces 12 mln quintals in months, eyes export market

LEMI – In a powerful testament to Ethiopia’s industrial growth and public-private cooperation, Lemi National Cement PLC has ramped up national cement supply by over 50% since commencing operations in September 2024, the company recently announced.

East African Holding Representative Adane Alemu made the announcement during a high-profile media and artists’ tour organized by the Government Communication Service. The factory, located in Lemi town, Ensaro Wereda of North Shewa Zone, is a joint venture between East African Holding and China’s West International Holding.

Since going operational, the plant has produced over 12 million quintals of cement in just a few months, solidifying its role as a major player in Ethiopia’s construction sector. “This factory is one of the most closely followed projects by the government,” Adane noted. “Its launch has significantly stabilized the national cement market, reduced imports, and enhanced economic integration.”

With a full production capacity of 15,000 tons per day (equivalent to 150,000 quintals), the factory is currently producing at a rate that matches market demand—but has clear ambitions for expansion. “Once the local market is fully satisfied, we plan to export to neighboring countries such as Djibouti, Somalia, and Kenya,” Adane added.

Beyond its economic contributions, the factory has also become a major employment engine, generating thousands of direct and indirect job  opportunities. Local officials lauded the development, calling it a symbol of the region’s potential.

The Ensaro Wereda Land Office Head Nigusayehu Mamuye emphasized the broader impact. “The factory has put our woreda on the map. It reflects the area’s rich natural resources and the peace that allows such transformative projects to flourish,” he said. “From employment to business growth, the ripple effect is being felt across the community.”

The visit by journalists and prominent artists served not just as a factory tour, but as a communication bridge—highlighting the strides being made in Ethiopia’s manufacturing sector.

Moreover, Lemi National Cement PLC is fulfilling its corporate social responsibilities, offering various community support services and contributing to the socio-economic upliftment of the area.

As Ethiopia continues to push for industrialization and self-reliance, the success of Lemi Cement signals what is possible through strategic partnerships, government support, and a stable investment environment.
