ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has taken a bold step toward revolutionizing its construction sector by partnering with Austria’s Baumit Group to introduce cutting-edge 3D-printed building technology.
The agreement, signed by the Federal Housing Corporation (FHC) during CEO Reshad Kemal’s recent working visit to Austria, marks a historic move that positions Ethiopia among the first African nations to adopt this advanced construction method. Countries such as Kenya and Malawi have already recorded success with the technology, and Ethiopia now joins their ranks in embracing the future of construction.
During his European tour, Reshad engaged with top construction technology suppliers in Wolfing, Austria, and participated in the Construction Machinery and Technology Trade Fair held in Munich. The aim was to explore innovative solutions that can address Ethiopia’s mounting housing demands and urban development challenges.
According to the FHC, the 3D construction printing system is set to transform the country’s construction landscape by reducing building costs, cutting down on material waste, and enabling complex architectural designs. Notably, the technology is designed to utilize up to 98% local construction inputs, ensuring both sustainability and self-reliance.
This strategic collaboration comes at a critical time for Ethiopia, as rapid urbanization continues to strain housing infrastructure. The introduction of 3D printing is expected to speed up construction timelines while maintaining structural integrity and design flexibility—key factors in modern urban development.
Beyond meeting immediate housing needs, the initiative underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to sustainable, tech-driven industrial growth. It is expected to set a new benchmark for innovation in Africa’s construction sector, signaling a shift toward digital construction methods.
The FHC has already demonstrated success with other modern construction techniques, including the use of aluminum formwork systems from South Korea through a partnership with OVID. The Corporation is also in the process of integrating precast construction technology in collaboration with Italian firm OneCo.
The 2025 Construction Machinery and Technology Trade Fair in Munich—held every three years—served as a global platform for emerging technologies. Ethiopia’s participation in the event has opened new avenues for strategic partnerships and transformative solutions to drive the country’s housing sector forward.
