On the 14th Anniversary of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

I would like to congratulate all Ethiopians, especially those who participated in the work at the sight, undeterred by the heat and cold, struggling day and night with resolution and determination to make the Dam a reality.

The contribution of Ethiopians from all walks of life and all corners of the world to the development of GERD cannot be overstated. From schoolchildren to laborers, from farmers to investors, Ethiopians have united in their dedication to realizing this transformative project, embodying the spirit of national pride and determination.

This anniversary is not only limited to celebrating the past achievements, but it also reinforces the ongoing efforts and collaboration required to complete the GERD, symbolizing hope and development for Ethiopia’s future.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has the potential to guarantee a sustainable energy, water, food and ecosystem resilience. Primarily, the objective of the Dam is to maximize the capacity energy production from hydropower source. One of the advantages of the GERD project is that it has a regional dimension, suppling clean energy not only to Ethiopia, but also to neighboring countries. No doubt, the Dam will contribute to sustainable development in environmental, economic and social perspective. Indeed, the project will as well help to cope with the consequences of climate change.

The GERD opens a sustainable and independent path towards Ethiopia’s industrialization, represents a pivotal moment in transboundary water management and African infrastructure development. The Dam is the insignia of the current generation in proving that it can accomplish grand projects.

As the Ambassador of Russia, I am happy to notice how the brotherly people of Ethiopia are confidently moving along the path of developing their national economy. The GERD construction is one of the major steps along this path. Completion of the construction of such a giant project shows that the people and government of Ethiopia are making constant efforts to ensure the economic development of the country and taking firm steps towards raising the standard of living.

Let me wish the talented and hardworking Ethiopian workers and specialists – the builders of the power plant new good and glorious deeds, new successes in their work for the benefit of their homeland and the whole Ethiopian people.
