ADDIS ABABA – The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) said that it has finalized preparations to implement the Farmers Field School (FFS) approach national guidelines across the country to expedite agricultural development.
In an exclusive interview with The Ethiopian Herald, Agriculture Minister GirmaAmente (PhD) stated that the preparation for the implementation of the FFS approach national guidelines has been finalized to fill gaps in the agriculture sector and boost productivity.
In previous years, with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the FFS approach was implemented in the Jimma zone of Oromia state, bringing a significant increase in productivity.
As a result, the Ministry has been emphasizing the expansion of this approach nationwide to overcome sectoral gaps and boost productivity. Accordingly, financial support has been secured from various partners to realize this initiative across the country, he said.
Girma stated that Ethiopia has been carrying out a wide range of activities to ensure self-sufficiency in rice production after wheat. The country has been showcasing a high increase in rice production compared to previous years. Right now, about 1.6 million hectares of land are covered by rice.
Moreover, machines are entering the country with the help of partners to overcome challenges related to the shortage of technologies needed to enhance the rice production process, he added.
The country has made wheat production a central pillar in its journey toward food self-sufficiency. Ethiopia has significantly increased its wheat yield, which is attributed to the expansion of irrigated farming, the use of improved seed varieties, and the adoption of modern farming techniques, according to the Minister.
Over the past six years, the government has implemented bold policies to enhance agricultural productivity, aiming not only to achieve food security but also to ensure long-term self-reliance. These efforts reflect Ethiopia’s commitment to breaking free from foreign dependency and fostering sustainable development.
