Japan hands over 6,000 metric tons fertilizer to Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA- The Japanese Embassy has donated over 6,000 metric tons of soil fertilizer to complement the efforts of the Ethiopian government to improve social, economic, and agricultural growth.

Japanese Ambassador to Ethiopia Shibata Hironori, during the handover ceremony said that Japan has handed over 6,000 metric tons of urea fertilizer for “the economic and social development program” of Ethiopia.

This grant aid aimed not only at responding to the needs of food and nutrition of Ethiopia, but also increasing the incomes of farmers as well as improving their livelihoods and alleviating poverty by making agriculture more productive, he noted.

“I expect that these fertilizers will be delivered and used by the people who need them most,” Shibata said.

Japan has actively supporting the development of Ethiopia and contributing to the improvement of people’s lives through various schemes, particularly in the fields of agriculture, infrastructure, industry, education and health, the ambassador said.

Japan will continue to support Ethiopia’s development efforts through various assistance projects as well as through other modalities of assistance.

“Agriculture sector will continue to be one of the most important sectors for Japan to extend its support. And we will continue to enhance assistance in this sector. To achieve this objective and for the peace and economic development of Ethiopia, we would like to work together with the government and people of Ethiopia. We will make utmost efforts to further enhance the two countries bilateral cordial relationship well into the future” stated Ambassador Shibata.

Finance State Minister Semereta Sewasew on her part said that both Ethiopia and Japan have long historical ties. “We will strengthen the cooperation works with Japan in various fields.”

Agriculture State Minister Sofiya Kassa(PhD) thanked the Japanese government for its support. And she added that the ministry will work to ensure that the soil fertilizer is used for its intended purpose.

Ambassador Shibata added that the government of Japan will continue to strengthen its support in various sectors, including agriculture.
