Calling for improved support systems for People with Down Syndrome

ADDIS ABABA Fikir Ethiopia National Association on Intellectual Disabilities has called on stakeholders and the public to enhance support systems for individuals with Down syndrome.

World Down Syndrome Day, observed annually on March 21, was marked this year for the 14th time globally and the 10th time in Ethiopia, with the theme: “Improve Our Support Systems.”

In connection with the day’s observance, Fikir Ethiopia National Association President Mihret Nigussie stressed the need for society to give greater attention to intellectual disabilities, particularly Down syndrome, to alleviate the challenges faced by affected individuals.

“Improving access to education, healthcare, and other socio-economic services is essential to maintaining their productivity. Coordinated efforts are required to create jobs for people with Down syndrome in the country,” Mihret said.

The association marked the day with various programs, including a mass walk and other awareness-raising events.

Mihret also highlighted that the association is collaborating closely with both local and international organizations, as well as volunteers, to provide sustainable support and income opportunities for low-income parents, especially mothers, to ensure a brighter future for their children.

A representative from the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, Alemayehu Mammo, emphasized that improving public awareness of Down syndrome is crucial to enhancing support systems for individuals with the condition.

According to Alemayehu, the government has made significant efforts to prioritize the issue and is working to make basic services more accessible to this segment of society.

World Down Syndrome Day has been observed annually on March 21 since 2007.

People with Down syndrome are also at an increased risk for certain medical conditions, including heart problems, hearing and vision impairments, and digestive issues. Down syndrome, or trisomy 21, is a genetic condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, leading to developmental delays, intellectual disability, and characteristic physical features
