
ADDIS ABABA – Deputy Mayor Jantirar Abay has announced Addis Ababa’s ambition to become a leading African commercial hub by transitioning to a 24-hour economy.
Speaking at yesterday’s forum with local merchants, themed: “Working 24 Hours: Striving for Prosperity,” he highlighted the city’s ongoing efforts to modernize its commercial system.
Jantirar emphasized the city’s commitment
to developing legal frameworks, expanding market access, and regulating the market to facilitate round-the-clock economic activity.
He stated that this initiative aims to leverage Addis Ababa’s position as the world’s third-largest diplomatic hub to drive regional prosperity.
The Addis Ababa Trade Bureau Head Habiba Siraj outlined government support for businesses, including the provision of working spaces and facilitated market connections, which have contributed to market stability. She also noted the city’s significant growth in its merchant population, which has increased by 121% in the past eight months, reaching 475,000.
Forum participants discussed the positive impact of macroeconomic reforms and the reduction of bureaucratic hurdles on the business sector through policy changes. A Q&A session allowed business owners to directly address their concerns with city officials. The event aimed to strengthen collaboration with the business community, expand trade activities, and combat illegal trade practices within Addis Ababa.
