ADDIS ABABA – Lack of Clarity and consistency in interpreting rule of law have been setbacks of the country’s justice delivery for over two decades, Federal Supreme Court President Meaza Ashenafi said.
She made the remark during a two-day long panel discussion on the last weekend with FDRE Council of Constitution Inquiry and other pertinent bodies. The President said the panelists and attendees are highly expected to come up with statutory interpretation in a fair way in a bid to serve equal justice for all.
According to Meaza ,among the 3,906 lawsuits, the council reexamined only 63 cases, thus the council needs to double its efforts in strengthening its capacity to explain a given legal case. The House of Federation Speaker Keria Ibrahim for her part said that concerned body should work in avoidance of divergent interpretations of provisions,as law interpretations are meaningful instrument in ensuring rule of law.
Rulings and decisions that are against the rule of law should not be entertained, the council’s is entitled to discuss and resolve such issues on federal and regional level, she added. “Despite the effort to uphold the constitutional and inalienable human and democratic rights of citizens, some people have been violating such rules knowingly and unknowingly recently.
” She further urged that all concerned bodies should work together aiming at improving the justice system, ensuring the rights of citizens and broadening the political landscape.”
