Demarcus is here to share his knowledge in banking to different private and government banks in the country. The Ethiopian Herald had a time of togetherness with Demarcus Ross on the different socio- economic and political–related turmoil that surfaced in Ethiopia as well as Africa. Excerpts:

The Ethiopian Herald: How did you find Ethiopia?

Demarcus Ross: I found Ethiopia a land of origin. I believe the beginning took place here. Many things that had happened in life pretty much happened in Ethiopia. So, I love the country, people, culture, and weather condition. I see great things for Ethiopia.

In addition the country is undergoing reform which is the first of its kind in the history of the country. The change is helping the country to reach at a new level. It shows how the country is thirsty for growth and the new government is working to cater to the needs of its people.

During the change, there might be challenges. But in concert it is possible to effect solutions. I suggest people to be united and advance the country. In the presence of unity everything can work and flow. The good value of the people could continue to increase.

Herald: What is your take on Ethiopia’s role in the region?

Demarcus: Ethiopia is playing a vital role in the region. The country is one of the sought-after negotiators whenever problems pop up in East Africa. Whenever they seek direction, neighboring countries lend a heeding ear to Ethiopia. They opt to assess what Ethiopia does first.

Often, they emulate what Ethiopia does first. So, Ethiopia has a positive influence on the region.

In addition, Ethiopia is the ancient country in the horn with numerous glories histories. Ethiopia is a peace-loving country. Due to that, the country is invited for peace-keeping missions in different countries. Especially, what Ethiopia did to keep peace in South Sudan is appreciable.

Currently, Ethiopia is serving a bridge for the East African countries. The good gesture of the new Ethiopian prime minster is very important for nations in the horn. He is playing a key role in negotiating the countries. I think Ethiopian youths are aware of him and his marvelous plan for the country. I believe that Ethiopia will continue to be first in many things as we moved forward.

Herald: What inspire you more about Ethiopia?

Demarcus: As I said before, Ethiopia is the land of origin. The tremendous political and cultural histories that took in the country are among the t h i n g s that grab my attention in Ethiopia. Currently, I can’t find better place than Ethiopia and I am happy to be here.

Herald: What is your take on the financial institutions in the country?

Demarcus: We need more banks and there should be some consolidation with smaller banks which needs more supports. Banks are helpful for the development of one’s country. We need a limited number of and strong not a lot of banks with the same service.

Banks must fulfill the needs of the people. There are many needs out there. Ethiopia is one of the countries with a growing economy that has many needs. I think banks should play a vital role in providing financial aid for houses, companies and different business sectors.

A good financial flow in the country has a great role in attracting international investors. This is helpful for technological transfer and experience sharing. The banks in the country are that kinds of banks that give consultation only for huge companies. But also, they must help small business sectors on how to become big companies down the road.

Furthermore, they should play a key role and be partners for the community.

Currently, the dearth of the foreign currency is being one of the challenges in the country. Ethiopia must probe into where the country is outlaying too much foreign currencies and resources in a not preferential manner. Ethiopia should look at neighbors to solve its problems. There should be trade exchange, among neighboring countries.

Herald: How did you observe infrastructures in the country?

Demarcus: Everything we discussed regarding the economy is dependent on the infrastructure. Now, things are very positive but we need more to develop. We need more highways and bridges to connect the region.

Right now the key task for Ethiopia is to invest in infrastructure. Keep on building you roads and bridges, so that the nation is well interconnected. It is vital for the growth of the nation. Internal local contractors should be involved as that can make a difference. But you have to take on board local contractors because they know more about their country than others. Internal force is very important for the development of one’s country.

Ethiopia has to show what is in the country in order to attract international investors. We are not living in the past we are living in the future. We have to showcase Ethiopia is changed. Once, the door is open things are going to be bright for the country.

What kind of financial or intellectual supports are good for Ethiopia?

Demarcus: China is playing a vital role in helping the development of nations when it comes to construction, trade and transport. I think there is a role for other countries like US too. We need to do more in garnering capital. My nation US should continue providing scholarships to students who are willing and able to come to study in US.

Currently, China is being engaged in construction tasks related to shipping, industrial partnership and provision of finance. America is being educational partner allowing access to colleges and universities. Intellectual and financial support should come together for a nation to develop.

Herald: What do you think are the main challenges for Africa?

Demarcus: The main challenge in Africa right now is getting open borders. Unity is the key to success for African countries because in unity, we can understand the needs of our neighbor. If we do not get it off our chest talking to our neighbors, they cannot help us.

Once unity is established, we can get to other issues like access to capital, technologies, market, and quality education.

Herald: What messages do you want to convey for Ethiopian youngsters?

Demarcus: They have to believe in themselves and have to check what skills they have. No skill is worthless. We need to be aware of what we bring to the table and promote it. The future of the country is on the hands of its youths.

They should be united to shape the future in better ways.

In addition, they should digest the history of their country. They must be aware of the importance of history to build the future. They have to think how they are going to make differences in the horn. All things are possible if they understand their value.
