School renovation volunteer program game-changer: Bureau

ADDIS ABABA – Addis Ababa Education Bureau said the school renovation volunteer program that was launched in the summer is a game-changer in improving city’s school standards.

Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa city, Engineer Takele Uma, launched a voluntary service program under the theme “My Gift for Addis” in the summer, which includes school renovation works among many other voluntary activities.

Speaking to The Ethiopian Herald, Addis Ababa Education Bureau Communication and Public Relation Director Abebe Chernet said that most of the public schools are below set standards, and the voluntary service program is a game-changer in this regard.

The summer volunteerism had opened opportunity to private-public engagement in more productive fashion than ever before, he said, and we should cultivate the volunteerism values for future generations. According to him, the joint energy of private and public partnership enabled to renovate over 400 public schools, and the Bureau aims to maintain the collaboration.

As the schedule for the start of the new academic year is approaching, schools in Addis Ababa are preparing to welcome their students with a better environment, he noted. The Bureau is also planning to include free meals and school uniforms for those in need.
