ADDIS ABABA-The Institute of Ethiopian Standards (IES) has announced the approval of 350 new and revised national standards aimed at enhancing economic development and consumer protection in the country.
During a press briefing yesterday, IES Director General Meseret Bekele (PhD) emphasized the positive impact of these standards will have on the nation’s quality of life, safety, and environmental protection.
Meseret highlighted that the newly approved standards align with both national and international guidelines, reflecting the current global market situation and the evolving needs of local industries.
The director general added that national standards council approved 207 new standards and revised 143 totally 350 compulsory and voluntary standards.
Of the 350 standards, 207 are entirely new while 143 have been revised, offering a robust framework for manufacturers and importers to ensure product quality.
The approved Ethiopian standards have huge economic and social benefit that help to promote an improved quality of life by contributing to safety, human health at large, protection of the environment and national security in general, she noted.
Meseret said that council guidelines help being produced product in the nation not below sub-standard and also passed through serious inspection.
Director General stressed the importance of effective enforcement by regulatory bodies and stakeholders to maximize the benefits of these standards.
IES Public Relations Director Bruk Habte on his part noted that 33 of new approved standards are compulsory, ensuring rigorous inspection and evaluation processes.
“These standards will empower local manufacturers to enhance their competitiveness in the international market”.
Bruk stressed that the council that approved new and revised standards include in the fields of agriculture and food, healthy safety and environment, textile and leather, chemical and chemical products and electromechanical products.
The approved standards not only support technological and knowledge transfer but also play a crucial role in safeguarding public health and the environment.
The new approved fields also include in the areas of electric vehicles, space science, fertilizer, metal and aluminum and spices and condiments, the IES aims to create conducive environment for sustainable development and national security.
The council’s efforts mark a significant step forward in ensuring that Ethiopian products meet high-quality standards, ultimately contributing to a safer and more prosperous society.
