Ethiopia mobilizes 29.1 million people, plants 615.5 million seedlings in one day

As part of the national Green Legacy initiative, Ethiopia has planned to plant 600 million saplings on the 23rd of August, within a single day. By mobilizing over 29.1 million people across the country, exceeding the plan, Ethiopia has managed to plant 615.7 million seedlings within 12 hours.

During the historic day when Ethiopia planted over 615 million seedlings within a single day, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and First Lady Zinash Tachew attended the one-day seedling plantation campaign, leaving their green legacy in Assosa, Benishangul Gumuz Regional State, alongside the Abbay River Basin.

More than 29 million people across the country have accepted the call of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) to participate in a national one-day plantation campagin. These tens of millions of patriotic citizenes help Ethiopia to plant 615.7 million seedlings within a single day, breaking its record.

Ethiopia’s Green Legacy initiative targets to build a better future for the coming generation. As part of the 29 million people mobilized to plant over 615 million seedlings within a single day, millions of children attended the campaign to plant their future.

Ashenda/ Shadey and Solel festivals are annual holidays celebrated by girls in Northern Ethiopia, in Tigray and Amhara Regional States. The holidays correspond to the end of a two-week fasting period for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians commemorating the Virgin Mary.

Beyond the religious value, the holidays are seen the freedom days in the areas. It has become among the eye-catching and beautiful street carnivals mainly attended by women and girls. This year’s Ahenda/Shadey/Solel holidays were celebrated colorfully across the two regional states.
