Corridor redevelopment ushers livability, public realm: Association

ADDIS ABABA – The undergoing corridor redevelopment projects in the metropolis promote an eco-friendly environment and convenient public realm, Association of Ethiopian Architects (AEA) said.

Approached by the Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA), the Association President Habtamu Getachew stated that the government is currently undertaking a massive infrastructural project that meets the ever-changing lifestyles, and makes Addis the right place to live and visit.

Apart from ensuring the well-being of residents, the unfolding urban transformation which embraces the building of skylines, parks, and historic monuments in the capital sheds light on the developments of a rapidly changing cityscape.

“The redevelopment reduces excessive utilization of resources, eases the hassles and makes life easier and more comfortable. It is also highly critical to expand corridors and infrastructures that connect urban nodes with the emerging smart cities.”

Due to its fragmentally designed infrastructural plan in terms of power installation, sewerage, and other related infrastructures, Addis Ababa has long been challenged by traffic congestion and similar challenges. “Therefore, the project is promisingly believed to meaningfully address other pressing hurdles.”

According to the expert, while constructing corridors, it is vital to preserve historical buildings and spaces should be left to keep the memories of residents. Besides, the activity needs to be accompanied by the active involvement of communities, professionals, and other stakeholders.

Expressing his association’s keen interest in being involved in the redevelopment program, Habtamu emphasized the role of political commitment to change the face of Addis and to convert urban slums into better living spaces thereby propelling Ethiopia’s economic progress.

In addition, well-planned residential-friendly buildings, streets, and spaces are crucial for Addis Ababa to address the pressing housing crisis and make its residents lead a modern and comfortable life. Such interventions would significantly improve the metropolis’ social, economic, and environmental conditions.

Praising the reform government’s engagement in riverside beautification, corridor redevelopment, and expansion of infrastructure and recreational projects, he recommended active involvement of the public, professionals, and other stakeholders in the timely and effective completion of projects.
