Federal Police launches probe on civilian attacks in Oromia: PMO

ADDIS ABABA – The Federal Police Commission is currently undertaking investigations on the recent attacks the Terrorist Shene forces committed on innocent civilians in West Wollega Zone of the Oromia State for further details, the Prime Minister Office (PMO) announced.

 Briefing the media yesterday, PMO Press Secretary Billene Seyoum said the attack has been purposely designed and communicated in manner to anger citizens in the Amhara State while victims of attack comprise ethnic Amhara, Oromo and Gumuz. The attack is also designed to ferment deep divisions between ethnic Oromo and Amhara. “At this moment, Ethiopia needs not to fall for the agenda of organized destructive forces. It requires a silent majority to actively demonstrate unity for Ethiopia’s enemies working actively for this cord.”

As to her, heavy government-led law enforcement operations have been carried out in various parts of Oromia in the past months particularly following last week’s civilian attack. “Defense forces reinforced the response operation against T-Shene starting from the very next day of civilian attack.”

Noting the Federal and State security forces continued to take measures against T-Shene, Billene pointed out those associates of the criminal faction propped up through foreign fans to destabilize the country. The government has also carried out rigorous tasks to enable communities to safeguard their own peace.

“The government is consistent in promoting peace to any political contestations. The posture of the government, prior to the start of the conflict, has always been one of peace. Recently, it announced the peace process as it always preferred peace, to succeed political and economic reform initiatives, to put end the trajectory chapter in its history, there is a need to avoid further bloodshed and misery occasioned by the conflict and it would like to foster national consensus through national dialogue.”

The press secretary further highlighted that the government has been accessing humanitarian assistance to affected communities in Tigray, Amhara and Afar states. The government has dispatched food and non-food items, medicine, fuel and cash to Mekelle on 488 trucks of which only 283 have returned from June 18 to 22.

Mentioning the Green Legacy initiative is one of many national development endeavors, she indicated the government has been mobilizing millions of people in creating awareness to decrease the rate of deforestation in the past couple of years. “As a direct outcome of the greenery program, it has managed to create over 183 thousand permanent and temporary jobs and has generated over 1.3 billion Birr income in wages.”
