China as a counterbalance to West’s intrigue, intervention

BY ADDISALEM MULAT

The premeditated intrigue of some members of the United Nations Security Council against Ethiopia has been foiled by a wide spectrum of nations such as Russia, China, India, Kenya, and others on the grounds that they stand with the truth.

Notwithstanding the fact that some members of the UNSC pulled out all the stops to intervene in Ethiopia’s internal matter utilizing cooked-up stories working in close collaboration with international media outlets, most nations worldwide have been defending the sovereignty of Ethiopia.

In the same way, the UNSC has made an effort to internationalize and politicize Ethiopia’s purely internal matter misled by some member nations that saw a political gain for themselves. No matter how hard they tried to pursue their objectives, some member states of the Security Council such as Russia, China, India, and other African and Caribbean countries managed to show integrity and solidarity with Ethiopia.

Despite the fact that westerners made an effort to paint the situation in Tigray in a wrong way, the aforementioned nations managed to stand on their ground in face of unwarranted pressure led by the U.S. In the present climate, a number of nations have been showing solidarity with Ethiopia by joining the #No More campaign unfolding in various parts of the world with the intention of condemning the interferences of westerns in the internal affairs of Ethiopia.

At the forefront of the anti-global imperialism, the campaign is China, a new rising power that is showing integrity to countries’ sovereignty and independence. Beijing has been at loggerheads with the West camp in defending Ethiopia on global platforms. Besides openly expressing its position at the UNSC, China lately sent its foreign minister amidst a massive misinformation campaign that Addis Ababa would come under siege by the terrorist groups.

In the spirit of solidarity, the Chinese Foreign Ministry (FM) Spokesperson Wang Wenbin has joined the #No More Global Movement to denounce Western interference in the name of democracy in a given sovereign country.

In his social media post, the spokesperson officially joined #No More Global Movement stating “O Democracy, how many crimes are committed in your name?!”

It is to be recalled that the #NoMore Global Movement is being taking place opposing the misguided policy of the U.S and other Western countries on Ethiopia. A huge number of Ethiopian and Eritrean Diasporas as well as other compatriots that hail from the Horn of Africa staged historic and monumental rallies across 27 cities worldwide.

State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen during his working visit to Ethiopia after the Eighth Ministerial Conference of FOCAC.

China stands against any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of Ethiopia since Ethiopians have the wisdom of solving their problem independently and stabilize situations by themselves, said Wangi Yi.

He reiterated China’s determination against any interference in Ethiopia’s domestic affairs. Noting the solid and unbreakable Ethio- China friendship, he said that his visit to Addis Ababa has vividly demonstrated China’s confidence in Ethiopia and its support for the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD).

Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen on the occasion appreciated the principled and consistent friendship of China with the people and government of Ethiopia.

He said that he is delighted to welcome Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Addis Ababa where everything is safe and the situation in the country remains calm and under control. Demeke commended the strong commitment of China to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ethiopia.

State Councilor Wang Yi stressed that China adheres to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs. We do not meddle in the internal affairs of Ethiopia, and we also oppose any external forces’ interference in the internal affairs of Ethiopia, and in particular, we disagree with the practice of some external forces to pressure Ethiopia for their own political purposes, said Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Zhao Zhiyuan in a zoom press briefing held last week.

“We are of the view that the current conflict in Ethiopia is the country’s domestic issue in nature. Ethiopia has the ability and wisdom to resolve the conflict and achieve inclusiveness and stability by political means in accordance with the law. Peace talks are the real solution and the only correct choice. China hopes that all parties in Ethiopia will take an active approach to end the conflict as soon as possible and work for lasting peace. China, as a good friend of Ethiopia, is willing to play a constructive role if needed by Ethiopia on the premise of respecting the country’s sovereignty.”

Democracy is not a patent held by one party and no country has the right to monopolize the definition and judgment of democracy or claim to be the beacon of freedom, added the Ambassador. He stressed that democracy and human rights cannot be used as a pretext to cement division and China opposes unilateral sanctions against Africa including Ethiopia.

China believes all humans share the same future. Sowing seed of deliberate division of “us” and “them” does not serve to the world’s peace and strategic stability, said the Ambassador, adding that democracy is not a patent held by a certain country. There is more than one form of democracy and more than one path to realizing democracy. No country has the right to monopolize the definition and judgment of democracy, or present itself to be the “beacon of democracy”.

Meanwhile, he said the so-called “Summit for Democracy” is just another attempt to cement division and impose judgment on others. It goes against the trend of the times and ends with no support, he added. The political trust between China and Africa is high at this time. Beijing will continue to be Africa’s most reliable and sincerest friend.

No matter how the situation is evolving, China will steadfastly stand with the Ethiopian people, and keep to the consistent position of opposing external intervention in Ethiopia’s internal affairs with the disguise of human rights or democracy.

China firmly supports Ethiopia’s efforts to safeguard sovereignty and independence and believes that the Ethiopian government has the ability and wisdom to manage the country’s internal affairs. China will continue to support the Ethiopian people as they work for peace, stability, development, and prosperity.

China and Africa are important forces for securing world peace and development. We will continue to firmly support each other on issues of core interests and major concerns, jointly safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core and the international order underpinned by international law and enhance the representation and voice of developing countries in international affairs.

The two sides will resolutely oppose any unilateral sanctions, any interference in other countries’ internal affairs, and racial discrimination, and will promote the shared human values of peace, development, fairness, justice, democracy, and freedom, to make greater contributions to safeguarding world equity and justice.
