ICT sector key to achieving economic strategy, ten-year govt’s plan: Ministry

The Ministry of Innovation and Technology discussing the first quarter performance stated that over the past three years, our economy has been changing at an astonishing rate with the emergence of indigenous economic policies and a free market system. The government’s firm belief in the use of technology alternatives to implement this change and ensure national prosperity is being seen in the from a number of national strategic projects.

Also, the ministry set the next 100 days plan with the entire staff of the respective institutes accountable to it. The forum was held at the former Geospatial Institute Conference Hall and was co-chaired by newly appointed senior officials of the Ministry.

In his opening remarks, the Minister of Innovation and Technology, Belete Molla, said he is pleased to have the opportunity to lead an institution with a wide range of professionals. According to Belete, the country and the institution will not be shaped overnight.

He added that the institution has been putting various reforms in place for many years, has gone through many organizations, and many leaders have left their mark. As a result, he said, it has created a desire for them to strive to fulfill their country’s mission by incorporating good practices, bringing their entire management closer to the employee.

The forum discussed the implementation processes and outcomes of the ministry’s key missions, the role of the staff in the process as a whole, the trends in the country’s transformation process, and the comments.

State Minister for Innovation and Research, Dr. Baisa Bedada, called on the staff to take steps to deliver the tasks for the next 100 days ahead of the deadline. According to Dr. Baisa, it will provide information-based support to enable departments to carry out their mission effectively and speed up the reform process at the national level.

“We must continue to build the institution, which is the source of many good experiences, as a constant source of experience and the source of new practices,” said Huria Ali, State Minister for ICT Infrastructure and Digital Transformation. She further said that the opportunity to implement and utilize the communication technology available in the sector should be taken first.

Minister Belete stated while concluded the forum by commenting on the questions and comments gathered from the staff. He said the government will accept the recommendations and return them in a timely manner.

“We have to work together as a family to create an institution where new results can be gained from good practices and continued with effective leadership. We are standing in front of you historically, not to reflect our personal political position, but to fulfill our country’s historical mandate,” Belete said.

Following the completion of the forum, they have been toured the Geospatial Institute and the activities and development stages of it from Mapping Agency in to its new form. Discussions were also held with the staff of the institute regarding future arrangements and work changes.

Meanwhile, the Ministry also observed the 18th Innovation Africa Digital Conference in order to boost innovation and research and strengthen political, economic and social benefits and ties among the region.

During this event, it was noted that the ICT sector is key to achieving the local economic strategy and the ten-year plan. In particular, the support and monitoring from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), who has an unrestricted vision, and his commitment to change Ethiopia, has given us a great potential to inspire all of us to embrace change.

In the conference, it was stressed that holding such conferences is help full to create a conducive environment for job creation in the country will play an important role in transferring knowledge, industry linkages and opening up market opportunities.

The well-prepared discussions, key messages and fruitful discussions presented on the first day of the conference indicate that there will be linkages to attract international investors and foreign direct investment to support the African economy.

The other day of the program, which was designed to be used for development through the implementation of financial technologies and modern digital finance, digitalization and digital transformation, has achieved a lot.

The main theme of this 18th African Innovation Digital Conference, was addressed on time identifying opportunities and challenges in the field of innovation and digital sector which was held to discuss national agendas on the sector.

It has been learnt that is was great opportunity for Ethiopia to host this conference, which was attended by ministers, advisers, senior executives, investors, delegates, dignitaries and keynote speakers.
