Major diplomatic activities over the week

 Ethiopian Ambassador to Djibouti, H.E. Berhanu Tsegaye received the newly appointed United Nations Resident Coordinator in Djibouti, Mr. Eric Overvest yesterday (October 27, 2021).

During the meeting, congratulating Mr. Eric for the new post at the UN in Djibouti, Ambassador Berhanu highlighted the multi-faceted and strategic relationship between Ethiopia and Djibouti and the ever increasing economic ties and the upward trajectory in areas such as road, railway, Power and air transport connectivity.

The Ambassador also gave briefings on the current situation in Ethiopia, giving particular emphasis on the efforts to pacify the country and defend the people from the heinous attacks of the terrorist group, TPLF.

Ambassador Berhanu mentioned the reluctance and unmerited approach from few institutions and countries in looking into the matter and the undue pressure on the government of Ethiopia, while evidences clearly demonstrated that TPLF is the culprit from the day it brutally attacked the Northern Command of the Ethiopian National Defense force; to the killings of civilians and the wanton destruction of property; from its incursion into Amhara and Afar regions by ridiculing the declaration of the unilateral humanitarian ceasefire as a joke to its audacious use to commandeer UN vehicles for the war in the region.

Mr. Eric, for his part, thanked the Ambassador for the warm welcome and noted that the UN is following situation closely while suggesting a peaceful resolution to the conflict that he said is endangering the lives of millions.

The two sides concluded their discussions by expressing their readiness to work together and further strengthen the ties.

State Minister, H.E. Ambassador Redwan Hussein, has met today (October 27) Mr. Shell H.Choo, the CEO of a South Korean metal investment company, EKOS STEEL MLL PLC, based in Dukem.

Mr. Shell H.Choo shared his experience of investing in Ethiopia and expressed his confidence to solve challenges with the support of relevant government bodies.

He said the company has finalized preparations to host an exhibition of Korean Agricultural Machinery products in the upcoming November in Dukem town in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and stakeholders in Ethiopia.

According to Mr. Shell, the company has also planned to attract more South Korean investors to Ethiopia by working closely with the Ethiopian embassy in Seoul.

Ambassador Redwan Hussein appreciated the company’s investment activities in the manufacturing sector, which aligned with the government’s priority areas for developing the nation.

He said the government is ready to provide the necessary support to their plan to build an industrial park in Ethiopia, urging them to prefer companies that are capable of transferring knowledge and technology.

He finally pledged to create frequent contact with the company and address observed challenges together with relevant bodies.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E.Demeke Mekonnen, had participated on Tuesday (October 26) in a ceremony held in Addis Ababa to mark United Nations Day.

In addressing the Gathering, Mr. Demeke underscored Ethiopia’s commitment to value the UN Charter and pledged to continue supporting the multifaceted activities that the UN is undertaking in Ethiopia.

Mr. Demeke also highlighted efforts of the Ethiopian government to create understanding between Ethiopia and the UN regarding current situations in the country.

As one of the founding members of the UN, Ethiopia would continue to play its part in achieving its goals, he added.

High-level UN officials and representatives from the African Union also addressed the gathering.

United Nations Day is an annual commemorative day, reflecting the official creation of the United Nations on 24 October 1945.

New Italian Ambassador to Ethiopia presents a copy of his credentials to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia

The new ambassador of Italy to Ethiopia, H.E. Agostino Palese, has presented today (October 26) a copy of his credentials to the Director-General of Protocol Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Mr. Feysel Alie.

Following his briefing on the current situation in Ethiopia, Mr. Feysel appreciated Italia’s stance in withstanding unsubstantiated allegations against the government of Ethiopia in this regard.

Mr. Feysel has pledged to extend all the necessary support to the ambassador during his stay in Ethiopia.

Ambassador Agostino Palese recalled the strategic partnership between the two countries and noted the need to advance the relationship with trade, cultural exchange, and other engagements.

New Malawi Ambassador to Ethiopia presents a copy of his credentials to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia

The Director-General of Protocol Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Mr. Feysel Alie, received today (October 26) a copy of the credentials of the new ambassador of the Republic of Malawi to Ethiopia, H.E. Charles Peter.

On this occasion, Mr. Feysel briefed the ambassador on the current situation in Ethiopia.

He appreciated the strong Pan-African stance of Malawi, which goes in line with Ethiopia’s position that calls for a strengthened relationship between the two countries.

Ambassador Charles Peter, on his part, expressed his delight to serve his country as an ambassador to Ethiopia, which is a symbol of independence in the continent.

He hoped that the two countries would strengthen their strong relationship with more engagements in transportation and trade.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen meets EU Commissioner for International Partnership, Jutta Urpilainen

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, H.E. Demeke Mekonnen, had a meeting on Monday (October 25) with H.E. Jutta Urpilainen, Commissioner for International Partnership of the European Union Commission, and H.E. Dr. Annette Weber, the European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa.

Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen congratulated the government of Ethiopia upon the successfully held elections asking for the new government’s perspective in handling issues of governance and security in the post-election period.

Recalling the strategic partnership between Ethiopia and the EU, she said the Union is planning to resume its development program and support the reform agenda of the government of Ethiopia.

The European Union, in particular, is ready to support the Ethiopian government in issues related to climate, energy, human development, health, Covid-19, good governance, and private sector development, she added.

She also tabled the EU’s concerns, including the need to have an all-inclusive dialogue among political figures, unfettered access to humanitarian supply, independent investigation of human rights violations, and hold perpetrators to account.

Mr. Demeke, for his part, expressed Ethiopia’s commitment to give unfettered access to humanitarian assistance by mentioning significant measures taken by the government in this regard.

Noting efforts being undertaken by the Attorney General’s office and the joint international investigation over alleged crimes, he underscored the government’s policy of zero-tolerance for any Human rights violation in the country.

The government of Ethiopia is undertaking its economic and political transformation while fighting the destructive acts of the TPLF clique, he said.

He also discussed the reform agenda of the Ethiopian government and expressed his expectations of support from the EU in this regard.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister also highlighted the formation of a new government comprising three leaders of opposition parties that ushered in an era of a new political culture in the country.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister appreciated the EU’s support given to Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo’s mediation efforts and spoke in detail about the government’s roadmap to resume an all-inclusive national dialogue in the country.

He urged the European Union to extend its Airbridge Humanitarian support to affected people in the Amhara region.

Mr. Demeke also called on the EU to condemn the TPLF for its transgression and pressure the group to immediately withdraw its soldiers from occupied areas in the Amhara region.

He finally said it is high time for the two sides to initiate the next round of political consultation mechanisms and create understanding and normalize relations
