ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia should actively support the recent move of 29 developing countries that expressed concern to the UN over the unilateral sanction, a scholar noted.
Historian and Political scientist Prof Biruk Haile told local media that the recently started move to end unilateral sanction should be supported by the Ethiopian government.
“Recently 29 countries, including Ethiopia, China and Russia have submitted letter to the UN to stop unilateral sanction and external interventions by the westerners” he said.
“Ethiopia should facilitate such moves for the reason that unilateral sanctions are threatening Ethiopians”
Ethiopia should match the endeavor of these countries by coordinating the AU and member states to build organized system of defending external and unilateral sanctions, he added.
The historian also appreciated the government’s issuance of ‘persona non grata’ which “is based on clear, substantial reasons”
“The government in its previous announcements has warned the officials to refrain from their illegal engagement but to no avail. So, the current decision is outcome of their reluctance to respect the nation’s sovereignty” he stated.
The officials [who condemned the decision] have said nothing or a little when hundreds of freight trucks were stranded in Tigray and are deployed for military purposes, he said.
As to him, the diplomatic protocol which gives privilege to UN officials has no obligatory rule to safeguard the status quo of an official if they [officials] violate critical rules. “The Ethiopian government has said it has fair reasons to pass the decision of ‘persona non grata”
The issue would be discussed in future sessions of UN meetings as the US and its allies are pressuring to make it agenda. Surprisingly, the US government has also responded to Ethiopia’s decision to be seen. And they are claiming further measures to be imposed against the decision. In response to this, all Ethiopians have to join their hands to fight against aggression, he recommended.
“The international community should be aware that the situation in Tigray was triggered and aggravated by the TPLF; the media should also resound this” he added.
