ADDIS ABABA – Over 300 members of Ethiopian and Eritrean communities in California met with Governor Gavin Newsom to express their admiration for his progressive policies and pledge their no votes in the August 16 recall election.
The two communities’ representatives made the remark when they met with California Governor Gavin Newsom in a zoom conference this week.
During the course of the meeting, they also expressed disappointment with the Biden administration’s aggression toward Ethiopia and Eritrea, including censures, sanctions, and a threat to damage us Ethiopian trade relations.
Regarding the discussion, Ethiopian American Wase Tesfa told Berkeley/ California based KPFA radio that find themselves in a less favorable position with the Biden administration and the conflict that has ensued in Ethiopia because of the war mongering and disruption of the TPLF, a group which was democratically ousted from power two and a half years ago, but continues to cause mayhem in the country.
“We are disappointed by the Biden’s administration’s tacit support of the TPLF, a minority organization that terrorized the country for over 30 years, and now does not shy away from children as soldiers and invading sacred places, such as the historical city of Africa,” he said.
He added that their concerns are the sanctions imposed by the Biden administration on the leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea, and the HR 445, which may be brought back for votes by Congress, and will put economic and other sections.
He further indicated that a major concern that will directly affect Ethiopian Americans is the terrorist TPLF’s activity to their case to lobbyists to cripple trade between the US and Ethiopia.
California Governor Gavin Newsom thanked them for their support. He also said he had internalized their concerns and taken notes and that he would speak to his Democratic colleagues about them. President Joe Biden, he said, would be there next week to help him stump for no votes on the recall.
