The recent meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has laid bare the planned conspiracy of some countries against Ethiopia. The session was a huge diplomatic gain for Ethiopia as some countries have stood with the truth by painting the right picture of Ethiopia’s current situation to the rest of the world.
The victory came at a time when some western countries have been exerting undue pressure on the government of Ethiopia under the guise of humanitarian aid, peace and stability. The unjustified pressure from some foreign powers emanates from their unfulfilled interest.
Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Gondar, Andargachew Tesfahun told The Ethiopian Herald that the main objective of some foreign powers is to install a puppet regime in the country which will easily execute their interests. Currently, Ethiopia is undergoing multifaceted reforms and there are western countries that are not happy with it.
“Ethiopia is one of the strategic countries in Africa and foreign powers are very much interested in the area and they want a government in Ethiopia that will fulfill their interest,” he added.
Despite the ongoing external pressure, Ethiopia has gained a meaningful support from UNSC member states as countries that tend to influence Ethiopia were unsuccessful in the meeting. “Strengthening all-rounded relations with emerging powers is the key issue which needs to receive much emphasis and also the government should also strengthen its effort mobilizing the people to stand together in the face of the increasing external pressure.”
For his part, Prof. Biruk Hailu said that most of the current UNSC members have made Ethiopians’ voices heard to the world in the Council’s latest session. Lack of consensus among members of the world’s most powerful decision-making body also implied a victory for Ethiopia.
As to him, most member states of the UNSC expressed their trust in the Ethiopian government’s capacity to handle domestic problems on its own; in a clear departure from the unwarranted pressure from some parties. Now, global powers including the U.S. have been officially criticizing the destructive activities of the terrorist TPLF clique. “Also, most of the UN members expressed commitment and desire for the continuation of Ethiopia as a sovereign state.”
The academician pointed out that Russia, China, India and other UNSC member states’ principled stance to non-interventionism poured cold water on the U.S. and its western allies’ attempt to twist the arms of the reform government. The support from the emerging powers would also boost Ethiopia’s diplomatic capacity. Having said Ethiopia achieved a lot from meeting; however, that some countries still continued efforts to impose unilateral sanctions. “UNSC is not the best venue to resolve the current conflict in Ethiopia and it should be handled in the auspices of the African Union.”
Despite the unexplainable atrocities of the terrorist TPLF, some members of the international community have not dared to condemn and take the appropriate measures in order to stop the group from its continued heinous acts. “What they need in the region is a government that attains their interest.
For instance, the terrorist TPLF’s atrocities are huge in Ethiopia. People are being brutally killed by the group. However, the reaction from some of the international powers is the reverse. Some of them even have been supporting the group while blaming the federal government.
The way out from such international pressure is to create a strong unity among the people of Ethiopia and eliminate the terrorist TPLF group from Ethiopia once and for all. The government and the people must work together to resist the pressures from the West and abolish the terrorist group for once and all, the scholar urged.
Most of the world powers are very much keen to have their interests fulfilled in the Horn of Africa by installing a puppet government in the member countries including Ethiopia. The Horn of Africa is an important strategic region that comprises of the Red sea connecting the three huge continents of the globe namely Africa, Europe and Asia, said Head of School of Diplomacy and International Relation at Civil Service University Endale Niguse.
He told The Ethiopian News Agency that it is also one of the most important locations in the world for its huge trade activities including the world’s 40 percent of oil transportation because of its proximity to the oil-rich Arabian Peninsula. Due to this, several international powers have been attracted to the region and are working to meet their interests by establishing military base in the region.
According to the scholar, some of these powers are working to establish a puppet regime that works for them in order to realize their interest in the region. The government of Ethiopia has been promoting regional integration by engaging neighboring countries including Somalia and Eritrea with a view to realizing peace, security and regional development. Ethiopia’s current foreign policy doesn’t feet with the interest being promoted by these world powers.
“Ethiopia has been following foreign policy that helps to maintain a diplomatic relation with all countries across the globe, but this kind of foreign policy is not comfortable for them as their intention is to use the government for their only interest.” In this regard, the pressure from the Western powers will increase until their intention to dismantling Ethiopia is realized, the scholar added.
The recent diplomatic victory registered at the UNSC is attributable to Ethiopia’s unwavering commitment to defend its sovereignty and dignity. The contribution of Ethiopians living overseas has been significant in fending off external pressure.
The diaspora communities have been supporting the home activities in various ways. They are engaging and supporting the country in various spheres. Their support at this critical time is crucial and needs to be continued. As Ethiopia is facing challenges both from internal and external anti-peace elements, the government needs to do its part in mobilizing and organizing the diaspora community more than ever at this critical time.
Millions of Ethiopians living outside the country are largely influential in supporting the government activities at their homeland. The ongoing operation is mainly to protect the sovereignty of the country and also protecting national interest and protesting against some foreign powers who are trying to meddle in the internal affairs of the country. The diaspora repeatedly kept calling on the international community to condemn the undue pressure from some western countries to refrain from putting unnecessary pressures on the country and also TPLF for rejecting the unilateral ceasefire of the Ethiopian government. The support of the diaspora is an add up for the government’s activities at home.
