Recent reports indicate that due to the strong opposition by Ethiopians association in the United States, the US has decided to delay its intent to ratify resolution against Ethiopia. This is a big success for the Ethiopians who did their best to rescue their nation from an unfair pressure. Their role can be said of vital significant as the government of Ethiopia is fighting a strong network of former TPLF friends, as Professor Brook Hailu told Ethiopian Press Agency recently.
Those who are interlinked through personal gains are waging concerted war against Ethiopia. These forces are launching organized campaigns of misinforming the US government especially the senate and congress in to taking wrong actions against Ethiopia.
As a result the struggle of Ethiopians becomes handier in safeguarding the century old Ethiopia –US ties. The diplomatic relations between the two countries is strong and broad based that has passed through ups and downs.
The recent tendencies of the US government has put the long standing relations between the two countries in danger. The pressure by the US government against Ethiopia in recent years started with forwarding biased stance on the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) which is a mega project that the entire people of Ethiopia are raising their money and knowledge. The people do this not to cause any harm on any other country and people but to lift themselves out of poverty.
Fighting poverty is a global agenda and an action that justifies human rights of people. Hence it needs strong support of all those who are concerned about respecting peoples human rights and fighting poverty.
The United States has also been strong supporter of development projects in Ethiopia. The successive governments in the US have also shown due support to Ethiopia in different ways. Contrary to this trend, it can be recalled that during the reign of Donald Trump’s presidency, he threatened to cancel financial support to Ethiopia that the US pledged in order to blackmail Ethiopia in to signing an unfair deal over the GERD. It was an unusual incident for the government of the United States to put sanctions against Ethiopia for running development projects like the GERD which is a noble cause.
In addition after the coming to power of President Joe Biden, the two countries are also facing another round of challenge in their relations. The unfolding the law enforcement operation in Tigray state has been manipulated to spoil the relations of the two countries.
Obviously the US has been reflecting critical responses against the government of Ethiopia ever since the beginning of the operation. The government of Ethiopia has a right to take legal actions against forces that violate the constitution and expose the sovereignty and wellbeing of the nation in danger. This is a sovereign right of a country that cannot be put on negotiation table. But to show maximum respect to friendly countries and international organizations with concerns to human rights and safety of innocent people the government has been making all the actions transparent and careful.
Yet the cliques of the belligerent and terrorist TPLF group have done all they could to sway the view of the US and other international organizations through well-organized misinformation campaigns. According to Professor Brook, the terrorist group has built a strong network of people during its three decades rule in the country. Now it is manipulating its network to put pressure on the congress and senate of the US so that they can take wrong decisions against the case in Ethiopia.
In both cases, ie the attempt to suspend funding to Ethiopia during Trumps presidency as well as US current sanctions of visa restriction, the TPLF Terrorist group and its network are to be held accountable as they are likely to leave no stone unturned to regain the benefits they lost after being routed from power.
Thus, to ward of the unfair pressure against Ethiopia and safeguard the ages of old strong ties, Ethiopians in the US as well as other European countries need to make equal efforts. For this end Ethiopians in the United States are making commendable movements in fighting the misinformation campaigns of the cliques of the terrorist group as well as preventing the strong Ethiopia-US ties from being derailed because of their adverse acts.
A consortium of 13 Ethiopian Civic Associations that operate in the United States have recently paid a working visit to Ethiopia. Consortium Head Professor Brook Hailu said these organizations of Ethiopians are working strenuously to rectify the course spoiled by TPLF and its clique who were able to sway the stance of some congress and senate members.
As Brook indicated, the associations were able to gain momentum in explaining the reality about both Ethiopia’s cause in building the GERD as well as subduing the terrorist group through disclosing the truth and facts. He further said the Ethiopians are likely to succeed in correcting the US recent wrong stance against Ethiopia through working in collaboration.
