ADDIS ABABA- Ethiopian and Foreign Nationals of Ethiopian Origin living in various states of the United States are going to hold peaceful protests today in New York against the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
Washington DC Peace and Unity Task Force Coordinator Tassew Melakehiwot told local media that members of Ethiopian Diaspora have finalized preparations to stage demonstration against the meeting.
“GERD is a matter of Ethiopia’s existence. The intervention of the Arab League and the United Nations in this regard is unacceptable,” he said.
He further said the GERD talks should continue under the auspices of the African Union (AU) to reach a governing solution.
As to him, the UNSC’s meeting on the dam is unacceptable and the Diaspora will massively protest against the meeting.
Representatives of the protesters said they will submit a letter of protest and a leaflet to diplomats attending the meeting and to diplomats at the United Nations.
Ethiopians and people of Ethiopian descent from New York, New Jersey, Boston, Connecticut, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, Maryland and other areas are expected to attend the rally.
“Ethiopians abroad will continue countering the international pressure in the country. The rally is co-ordinated by members of the Ethiopian Team and other patriotic Ethiopians in Washington DC, Ethiopia.”
Member of the Interim Executive Committee of the Ethiopian Diaspora Action Council Alemayehu Sileshi called upon the Diaspora living in the United States to actively participate in today’s demonstration.
The Diaspora will continue its financial, labor and knowledge support for the construction of the GERD, he noted.
